Which piano plays all by itself?

The programme booklet for the joint Rachmaninoff cycle by the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich and Opernhaus is available in printed form at the ticket office and at the CD stand on the evening of the concert (CHF 5).

The joint Rachmaninoff cycle of the Zurich Opera House and Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich enters the decisive round: the conductors swap desks and orchestras – and share the soloist. So now Gianandrea Noseda, the General Music Director of the Zurich Opera House, is performing Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 1 with our orchestra; Francesco Piemontesi is playing the 4th Piano Concerto. It is less famous than the other three, but the Ticino pianist is particularly fond of it: as a child, the recording with Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli was one of his favourite records, he says. And he is looking forward to working with Noseda, with whom he has been good friends for a long time: the work is more complicated than others, "so it needs a conductor like him".
