Mendelssohn's «A Midsummer Night's Dream», live from the Tonhalle Maag in Zurich. The Tonhalle-Orchester Zurich under Music Director Paavo Järvi takes you into the fabulous dream world of Mendelssohn's music to Shakespeare's «A Midsummer Night's Dream» - and gives you a first impression of the Mendelssohn cycle, in which the composer's orchestral works are recorded on CD.
What would a film be without music? Something as incomplete as a play without music in the 19th century. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy played a significant role in this development: commissioned by the culturally-minded Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV, he wrote a varied and colourful score for the performance of William Shakespeare's «A Midsummer Night's Dream» in 1842/43.
This «soundtrack» has since been one of Mendelssohn's most popular works. No wonder, since he found exactly the right tone for the various atmospheres and moods of Shakespeare's «enchanted» plot, which starts with the fairy king Oberon: this was already the case in the overture, which Mendelssohn had composed almost twenty years earlier - at the age of 17 - as an independent work and now enriched with further numbers. In the process, he created real «hits» such as the extremely popular Wedding March.
Streaming and CD production have only been possible thanks to generous private supporters, for which we are extremely grateful.
