Prominent Jury is Complete

Now in its eleventh year, the renowned International Film Music Competition will take place on 30 September 2023 as part of the «Cinema in Concert» gala at the Tonhalle Zürich. The prominent jury under the direction of Oscar winner Volker Bertelmann («All Quiet On The Western Front») is now known.

The international jury for the «Cinema in Concert» gala at the Tonhalle Zürich under the musical direction of Frank Strobel is complete: it is presided over by Volker Bertelmann, also known by his stage name Hauschka, who won the Oscar this year for his film score for the global hit «Nothing New in the West». «It is a great honour for me to be the jury president of IFMW Zurich 2023,» says the composer and pianist, adding: «Giving composers the opportunity to present themselves to the public and to receive inspiration for their work is an important concern for me and I look forward to the exchange.»

As in previous years, the jury will be joined by German conductor Frank Strobel, who will conduct the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich in the evening. International award-winning film composer and Emmy winner Mark Bächle will be on hand as a special guest – a medley of his best-known works will be played in his honour in collaboration with Suisa. Also on the jury: award-winning director Sophie Linnenbaum, who presented her debut feature «The Ordinaries» in the Focus Competition of the 18th ZFF, and director and animator Gabrielle Selnet, whose short film «Au Revoir Jérôme!» was chosen for the Competition. It is about a multi-faceted and bittersweet love story in the afterlife.

«For the nominees, it is always very exciting when the orchestra performs their work, that happens very rarely. And for the audience, it can change depending on the music,» says Marc Barwisch, Head of Artistic Operations at the Tonhalle-Gesellschaft Zürich. The jury will select the winning composition on the same evening and present the Golden Eye, worth 10,000 Swiss francs, for the «Best International Film Music 2023».
