Classical music meets art and dance

This time, works by Cathy Josefowitz meet music by Arnold Schönberg at "classic meets art".

The Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich is a guest of Hauser & Wirth Zurich for the third time. Our musicians activate the gallery's exhibition spaces, creating an exciting dialogue between art and music.

In this edition of "classic meets art", works from the exhibition by American artist Cathy Josefowitz meet a string sextet from the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich. Born in New York and raised in Switzerland, Cathy Josefowitz's (1956-2014) wide-ranging oeuvre spannning drawing and painting, performance and dance.

Arnold Schönberg's "Verklärte Nacht" will be performed. The work unfolds a veritable frenzy of sound and transports us to the world around 1900, the "fin de siècle". Schönberg was inspired by the lyrical spirit of the time and set the poem "Verklärte Nacht" by Richard Dehmel to music. When he heard the stirring result, his own verses were of secondary importance to him, he was so "enchanted by the music". In 1942, Schönberg allowed the choreographer Antony Tudor to use the music from "Verklärte Nacht" in his ballet "Pillar of Fire".

For this edition of "classic meets art", we have gone one step further and invited Graciela Martinez and Neel Jansen to interpret the visual and musical work through dance. Graciela and Neel, choreographers, dancers and teachers, have been leading their own company, the Lit Dance Company, since 2019 with the support of Bühne Aarau and the Aargauer Kuratorium. Currently focusing on contemporary dance and exploring the impact of external influences on the human body in their works, both have completed their training in classical dance.

A short introduction to the exhibition and the musical programme as well as an evening at the bar will provide the framework.
