Designated Chief Conductor Paavo Järvi
Paavo Järvi will become the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich’s new Chief Conductor and Music Director as of the 2019/20 season. Besides concerts in Zurich, his five-year contract will include tours and CD recordings. However, Paavo Järvi will already be present before taking up his post: he has given a guest performance together with his Estonian Festival Orchestra at the Tonhalle Maag in January 2018 and spend three weeks in Zurich during the 2018/19 season.
The Estonian conductor directed the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich for the first time in 2009. His second visit was in December 2016, when he conducted four concerts at which he struck a chord with orchestra and audiences alike. The media reported: “Järvi does not need to direct light upon himself; he radiates of his own accord. An analytical mind and a sense of tone, experience and spontaneity – that is his secret,” as Peter Hagmann put it in his concert review.
