Season opening with Paavo Järvi
Paavo Järvi has chosen «Kullervo» by Jean Sibelius for the inaugural concert as the new Chief Conductor and Music Director of the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich. It is a tragic Finnish saga, formed into a great symphony with choirs and vocal soloists.
Paavo Järvi on the work
For me «Kullervo» is a very suitable piece for this very special and festive concert, which is not only the beginning of a season, but also at the beginning of the first season of the orchestra and me as a team.
I also find «Kullervo» an interesting choice because it's off the beaten track. It's something you wouldn't expect, and that's exactly what I can imagine to be the red thread for our future seasons.
With Paavo Järvi, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Estonian National Male Choir, Peter Mattei, Randi Stene.
