Season 2026/27

Discover the new season

Once again, three musicians are shaping our programme. The programme also focuses on Prokofiev, Georgia – and Beethoven.

With pianist Khatia Buniatishvili and pianist, organist and conductor Wayne Marshall, the focus artists of the 2026/27 season are for once entirely focussed on the keys. Nevertheless, they could not be more different: Khatia Buniatishvili will play great Romantic works, while Wayne Marshall's programme will focus on his love of George Gershwin and improvisation. As Creative Chair, the Swiss composer Dieter Ammann will also characterise the season - with his works, but undoubtedly also as an inspiring personality behind and beside the stage.

Paavo Järvi will continue the Mahler cycle with Symphony No. 6, which will not only be performed in Zurich, but also on tour - and in particular at our Mahler residency in Baden-Baden. He will also present the continuation of the Rachmaninov cycle in collaboration with Gianandrea Noseda, General Music Director at Zurich Opera House: this time, Prokofiev 's orchestral works will take centre stage in four concerts - and once again the conductors will swap orchestras.

The programme also focuses on Georgia, the home of Khatia Buniatishvili, violinist Lisa Batiashvili and pianists Giorgi Gigashvili and Tsotne Zedgenizde, who are both making their debuts with our orchestra. And on the other hand to Beethoven, whose 200th anniversary of his death we are honouring with a rich programme: Paavo Järvi conducts the "Missa solemnis", Rudolf Buchbinder plays all five piano concertos, Igor Levit performs two sonata recitals, plus the complete string quartets with the Quatuor Ébène and the Belcea Quartet. And much more ...

In the 2026/27 season, four conductors will once again be making their debut with the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich: in addition to focus artist Wayne Marshall, they are Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, Hannu Lintu and Hankyeol Yoon. In addition to the soloists already mentioned, pianists Beatrice Rana, Hayato Sumino and Lukas Sternath, violinist Hana Chang, cellist Lionel Martin and percussionist Vivi Vassileva will be performing with our orchestra for the first time. Most of them were once part of the Série jeunes and have since embarked on a great career - it's well worth keeping an eye on who will be performing in the Série jeunes in the coming season!

Under the motto "classic meets ...", we will also be crossing borders in all possible directions in the 2026/27 season. In the "classic meets art" series (announced at short notice), our musicians will perform at Hauser und Wirth and in museums. We will continue the film symphony and literature and music series as well as the tonhalleLATE and tonhalleCRUSH formats.

And what else? We are looking forward to the second tonhalleAIR in the Münsterhof: two days of top-class music with free admission in the heart of the city. Our musicians are also flying out for the chamber music series "Kunterwunderbunt" - to various community centres. They have once again come up with attractive programmes for the chamber music matinees and lunch concerts. And then there is the "Connect" inclusion project, in which we offer dance training for people with Parkinson's and multiple sclerosis together with other institutions, and which has now become firmly established.

If you would like to know more about our plans - Artistic Director Ilona Schmiel and Music Director Paavo Järvi tell us in an interview.
