Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich is once again taking part in Sonic Matter, the festival of experimental music, this season. The programme opens with Dieter Ammann’s ‘unbalanced instability’ – a work that demands a great deal of balance and stability from the performers in order for its character to come to the fore. The solo part is performed by Carolin Widmann, who has long been deeply engaged with contemporary works. This is followed by the Finnish conductor Hannu Linttu conducting the tetralogy ‘Tzimtzum’ by the German composer Sarah Nemtsov, born in 1980. “She creates a continuous stream of music,” a critic once wrote in the *Süddeutsche Zeitung*: “It blends the tender with the brutal, the menacing with the promising …”
