This is not the first time that Russian pianist Dmitry Yudin has performed at the Tonhalle Zurich: in the final of the Concours Géza Anda 2024, he played Bartók's Piano Concerto No. 2 under the direction of Paavo Järvi. The 26-year-old now presents a varied recital programme: it begins with the Sonata in E major, which Beethoven wrote when he was only slightly older than Yudin is today - and ends with the Handel Variations, which Brahms composed for Clara Schumann. In between are the sonata by Erwin Schulhoff, in which one can recognise echoes of Brahms' "Hungarian Dances" - and the imaginative humoresques with which Max Reger inserted himself into the genre tradition once opened up by Schumann. Resourceful ears are also likely to recognise inspiration here: Among other things, Reger quotes the hit song "Du bist verrückt, mein Kind", which was popular in his day.
