Just under three years ago, the British pianist, organist and conductor Wayne Marshall made his dazzling debut with our orchestra with Gershwin’s ‘Concerto in F’ – now he returns as our featured artist. Gershwin once again takes centre stage in his first programme – twice, in fact: the famous ‘Rhapsody in Blue’, thanks to which Marshall discovered his love for this composer as a child, is followed by the less frequently performed ‘Second Rhapsody’, which is also imbued with jazz, blues and symphonic elements. Paavo Järvi will also be presenting some of his favourite works in this concert: in his case, they come from France, by Fauré and Bizet, whom he once described as a ‘true, vastly underrated genius’.
