Who was Wilhelm Stenhammar? The Swedish composer, pianist and conductor is still considered an insider tip among Scandinavian late romantics. But his Symphony No. 2 in particular is now regularly performed, and for good reason: The work, which was already acclaimed at its premiere in Gothenburg in 1915, combines folk music elements with the classical heritage in a way that is as refined as it is straightforward. The symphony plays with church modes and the form of the fugue, with song-like sounds and large wind solos. It offers Paavo Järvi and the orchestra ample opportunity to show off their musical charm and character.
