Marek Janowski with Schubert and Beethoven
Marek Janowski with Schubert and Beethoven
"One of the last great conductors" was the title of a portrait of conductor Marek Janoswki in the NZZ in 2025. Now the 87-year-old is stepping down: The end of 2026 is the end, and "ironclad", as he said in an interview. He bids farewell to our orchestra and the Zurich audience with Schubert's Symphony No. 5 - the youthful work of a 19-year-old! - and Beethoven's epochal (and in this performance with a large orchestra) "Eroica". And there is no doubt that we will once again be able to experience what makes Janowski a "great conductor": his clarity, his unerring ear and his loyalty to the works, which are always more important to him than his own performance.
