Gustav Mahler not only composed "Das himmlische Leben" from the folk song collection "Des Knaben Wunderhorn" as a song, but also later incorporated it into the finale of his 4th Symphony. In this concert - in keeping with the Mahler cycle of the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich - a third version is now at the centre of a programme that is also dedicated to the song and the songlike. The arrangement for soprano, clarinet and piano is based on an instrumentation already used by Spohr and Schubert. Schumann also appreciated the cantabile possibilities of the clarinet, as his Fantasiestücke op. 73 show. And then there is the Romance for clarinet and piano by Brahms' pupil Marie Elisabeth von Sachsen-Meiningen: A piece that she herself regarded as a "dilettante composition", but which was also popular in an orchestral version in her time.
