Beethoven composed 16 string quartets; over a period of around a quarter of a century, he developed the genre from the Haydn succession to the late works that point far into the future. In the Beethoven year 2027, the Belcea Quartet and Quatuor Ébène will perform all of the quartets - not in chronological order, but in such a way that different creative phases stand side by side.
In this concert, the Belcea Quartet builds a bridge from the early B flat major quartet from op. 18, in which Beethoven bundled six works in the Haydn manner, to the late op. 132. The formalities alone show how far he ventured into new realms: This quartet has not four, but five movements, and the third, entitled "Heiliger Dankgesang eines Genesenen an die Gottheit" (Holy song of thanksgiving of a convalescent to the deity) and with clear references to the Protestant chorale tradition, goes beyond the framework of absolute music.
