No event in the world had “made him feel so much like a Jew” as the Hamas massacre in Israel on 7 October 2023, Igor Levit said at the time. This was followed by an album of Mendelssohn’s ‘Songs Without Words’ – performed with an urgency that once again demonstrated how closely this pianist links his musical approach with his social concerns. Nor was it by any means a coincidence that he included Ravel’s ‘Kaddish’ from the ‘Deux mélodies hébraïques’ in his recital programme. He also performs works by Shostakovich and Liszt.
