This was followed by an album of Mendelssohn’s ‘Songs Without Words’ – performed with an urgency that once again demonstrated how closely this pianist links his musical approach with his social concerns. Nor was it by any means a coincidence that he included Ravel’s ‘Kaddish’ from the ‘Deux mélodies hébraïques’ in his recital programme.
