Music inspires literature, which in turn inspires music: This programme shows how this can work. The programme begins with Beethoven's "Kreutzer Sonata", named after the violinist Rodolphe Kreutzer, to whom it is dedicated - but who never played it. It was originally written for the black violinist George Bridgetower, who later said that Beethoven withdrew the dedication "after a silly argument about a girl". This story has almost literary qualities, but in his novella "The Kreutzer Sonata", Tolstoy tells a completely different story about a man who kills his wife out of jealousy - because she played Beethoven's "Kreutzer Sonata" with someone else. Tolstoy's story, in turn, was the model for Leoš Janáček's "Kreutzer Sonata", which is not a sonata but a string quartet in which - unlike Tolstoy - he vehemently took sides musically in favour of the alleged adulteress.
