Brahms had tried out various instrumentations until he found the right sound for one of his greatest chamber music works in the Piano Quintet. Clara Schumann compared it to a "great tragic story"; for conductor Hermann Levi, it reached a level that no one had achieved since Schubert's death. Speaking of Schubert: various themes in Brahms' quintet are unmistakably reminiscent of his style. Beethoven also reacted to other works in his "Gassenhauer" trio: the composition was given this title because it took up a popular theme from Joseph Weigl's opera "L'amor marinaro" in the third movement. And it is also easy to identify Mozart's "Kegelstatt" trio as a model.
