Serenades once took their name from open-air evening serenades. But even when they were taken up in the concert hall, they retained their light, entertaining tone. This applies to Beethoven's D major Serenade from his early Viennese years as well as Ernst von Dohnányi's Serenade in C major, which betrays a certain Beethoven influence in between. Both works begin with a march, both hint at Eastern European inspiration. In between, there is Jean Françaix's early string trio: not a serenade, but a lively work that is perfect for a morning serenade.
