"Beethoven? ... of course!" is the motto of this season's chamber music matinees. And so this programme also begins - naturally! - with Beethoven. The extremely energetic String Trio in C minor was composed between 1796 and 1798; Beethoven was 26 to 28 years old at the time and his hearing impairment, which later led to complete deafness, was already apparent at the time. Smetana and Fauré also suffered the same fate: both became deaf and both went on to write important works. These include Smetana's cycle "From the Homeland", inspired by folk music, as well as Fauré's Piano Quintet No. 2 - the last movement of which quotes the "Dona nobis pacem" from Beethoven's "Missa solemnis".
