2027 is a Beethoven year - and in the chamber music matinees, we're already giving you a taste of what's to come: The series kicks off with the piano trio that has become known as the "Ghost Trio". The second, extremely slow movement is particularly spooky: Beethoven's pupil Carl Czerny found it "ghostly and eerie, like an apparition from the underworld", thus giving the work its nickname. The second piece in the programme, Shostakovich's Piano Quintet, was premiered by the composer and pianist in 1940 together with the Beethoven Quartet, with whom he had a close working relationship. In this music, too, you can hear ghosts here and there, both from the past and from the present - but they are brilliantly banished in the finale.
