Both Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and his sister Fanny travelled extensively through Switzerland in their younger years, climbing several mountains along the way. These journeys shaped all three of them - this is particularly evident in their songs, which violinist Isabel Neligan has arranged for piano quartet. The other works in the programme were not written directly after these journeys, but the Romantic fascination for nature is also palpable in them.
