A saxophone quartet for music from the 18th century? The combination is bold, but conductor Jan Willem de Vriend has always combined his experience with historically informed performance practice with a great love of experimentation. He conducts arrangements of Mozart's Sinfonia concertante and a "Kyrie" by Antonio Vivaldi, in which the Ensemble Kebyart takes on the leading roles. The composers probably wouldn't have minded, after all, both of them repeatedly explored "exotic" instruments: Mozart composed for the glass harmonica, Vivaldi for the mandolin. If the saxophone had already existed in their time, they would hardly have missed out on this sound. Incidentally, Mozart himself enjoyed appropriating earlier works: Handel's "Acis and Galatea" can be heard in his version in this concert.
