Dieter Ammann’s concerto for violin and chamber orchestra is entitled ‘unbalanced instability’ – a work that demands a great deal of balance and stability from the performers in order for its character to come to the fore. The solo part is performed by Carolin Widmann, who has long been deeply engaged with contemporary compositions. Alongside this, the Finnish conductor Hannu Linttu makes his debut conducting two very different orchestral works: Stravinsky’s ‘Symphonie d’instruments à vent’ ranks among the most original compositions for wind instruments, whilst Sibelius’s Symphony No. 7, the crowning glory of his symphonic output, celebrates ‘the joy of life and vitality, with appassionato passages’ – as the composer himself put it.
