An Anglo-Saxon oriented programme with a focus on Beethoven? Yes, that is possible. Although Beethoven was never in England, he maintained close contacts with London - and composed Scottish and Irish songs, which are sung here by Gregory Feldmann. There is also instrumental chamber music by the British composer Frank Bridge and the Americans Aaron Copland and Peter Schickele. The latter is best known under a pseudonym: He invented P.D.Q. Bach, the 21st child of the great Johann Sebastian - and under this name he presented not only a detailed biography but also captivating musical caricatures of a moderately talented Baroque composer. The piano quintet that he published under his own name, on the other hand, is meant seriously and is as masterfully written as it is varied.
